Academics

Course of Study

Because the study of Japanese language is the core of the academic program, every full-time student must enroll in a language course. All levels, beginning through advanced, are offered. The approach and emphasis of each class is tailored to fit the varying needs of the students. Students are not allowed to take other undergraduate courses outside of this program. For this reason, this exchange is best suited for those students only looking to better their language skills and learn about Japanese culture.

The hiragana-katakana-kanji writing system is introduced in all classes at the very first lesson to familiarize the students as quickly as possible with the characters they will encounter in their daily life in Japan. Exchange students can take a range of seminars that focus on use of Japanese language in business and tourist contexts. A wide selection of courses in English are also available to students who wish to take course toward their UNL degree requirements or to gain a better intellectual understanding of Japanese culture, history and art. Courses in English include business, politics, history, and religious studies. Students interested in traditional Japanese arts can enroll in calligraphy courses, tea ceremony classes, and flower arrangement courses among many other creative classes. Course Credit

Credits earned at foreign institutions are transferable to UNL by departmental validation. Please see "earning credit" page on UNL Education Abroad site for more information.

Eligibility

Any UNL undergraduate is eligible to participate in the program at Nanzan University. A 3.0 GPA is required. The exchange program lasts two semesters. The fall semester is early September to late December, and the spring semester is mid-January to late May. Single semester placements are only available to students who do not participate in the exchange program and pay fees directly to Nanzan University. Students applying for the exchange program should demonstrate a genuine interest in Asian studies, languages, or international experience and must display a general interest in the program. No Japanese language is required at the time of application, but students are encouraged to take at least one semester of study before beginning the program. Students with previous Japanese language experience will be placed at the appropriate level. Please meet with the UNL Exchange Coordinator to learn more about exchange programs and the placement process.

Location

Nanzan University is a private institution founded in 1946. It is one of the 43 Christian colleges in Japan. Located in Nagoya, population over 250,000, most of the University's 10,000 students come from the surrounding area. The Center for Japanese Studies was founded in 1974 to develop the international character of the University, and to provide foreign students with an ideal environment for the study of Japanese people and culture. The Center hosts more than 130 men and women from a wide variety of nations each year. Situated on one of the highest points overlooking Nagoya, the campus has the buildings and facilities of a modern university. Nagoya is a modern yet traditional city, historically dating to the 17th century. With a regional population of more than eight million, it is the fourth largest city in Japan and is one of Japan's major international trading ports. Its central location gives access to the major metropolises of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto in two hours or less by Japan's modern transportation system. Nagoya is also close to mountains, large rivers, hot springs, and several scenic resorts, national parks, and shrines. The climate is generally mild with four distinct seasons.

Accommodations and Other Arrangements

As part of Nanzan University's focus on intercultural communication and cultural immersion, UNL exchange students have the opportunity to live with Japanese families. Students will get the opportunity to experience daily Japanese life and live with families who have been carefully screened and have hosted students in the past. To compliment the program, the Center for Japanese Studies organizes several trips and cultural events each semester. Past excursions have taken students to historic cities such as Nara and Kyoto for stays at Buddhist monasteries and visits to well-known Japanese companies. The Japan Plaza, a new language learning venue on campus, allows exchange students the opportunity to practice what they have learned in class by creating an encouraging environment for speaking Japanese.

Deposit

Upon confirmation of nomination acceptance, program participants will pay a $150 commitment deposit. The $150 deposit will be applied to the final program cost balance. If a participant withdraws from a program, the participant will be responsible for any irrecoverable costs associated with the program at the time of withdrawal (including a non-refundable $150 Education Abroad Fee).

Explanation of Costs

Exchange program participants pay tuition and fees to UNL for 15 credit hours at the appropriate resident or non-resident rate, plus a $150 Study Abroad Fee and other fees related to the exchange. Please see the Budget Sheet for a detailed explanation of program costs and the payment process.
