Unlisted Opportunity Policy

There are many program options listed in MyWorld. Most UNL students find that MyWorld offers “too many” rather than “too few” opportunities. In general, students are encouraged to pursue programs that are listed in MyWorld and administered by UNL and/or its partner institutions and organizations. Pursuing an unlisted opportunity may require significant independence and maturity, as UNL does not have a formal relationship with the program and the program may not offer comprehensive student support services.

If you wish to seek academic credit on an education abroad program that is not listed in MyWorld, you must:
  1. Carefully review the appropriate unlisted program brochure, depending on the program type and your status as an undergraduate, graduate/professional, or law student.
  2. Verify that the location(s) you wish to visit do not have a U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory of Level 3 or Level 4.
  3. Search MyWorld for programs that are identical or very similar in nature.
  4. Meet with an Education Abroad Coordinator to discuss the program.
  5. Complete the appropriate unlisted program application.

Use of this Application

Completion of this application is required if:

  • You are currently a UNL student; and
  • You are planning to participate in a credit-bearing education abroad program that is not listed in MyWorld
You can conduct a program search on the Education Abroad website.  If your program is not listed then you are required to complete this application.

The Approval Process

Your application will be reviewed by the UNL Education Abroad Office and, if necessary, by advisors or administrators from your home department and college. Review of the application will be based on the information provided by the student. UNL will not contact or formally evaluate the program or organization/institution, so “approval” of an unlisted program application in MyWorld does not serve as an explicit endorsement of the program or organization/institution.

The deadline to complete the unlisted program application is one month earlier than the regular deadline for programs listed in MyWorld:
  • October 1: Spring semester programs
  • February 1: Summer, Fall semester, or Academic Year programs

Likelihood of Approval

A student is more likely to be approved for an unlisted opportunity if:
  • The student has a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • The student has advanced foreign language skills, if applicable.
  • The program is funded by a UNL office, department, or college or the U.S. government (i.e., Critical Language Scholarship or Boren African Flagship Languages Initiative).
  • The program is administered by a reputable accredited U.S. university or education abroad provider committed to good practices in the field of education abroad.
  • The opportunity is experiential (internship, research, or service learning) and the student has strong support from a UNL faculty member who is willing to supervise internship, independent study, or research credit.
  • UNL has no listed programs in the desired location and the location is considered to be safe.
  • UNL has no listed programs in the desired field of study.
  • The student wishes to directly enroll at a foreign university in an English-speaking country.
A student is less likely to be approved for an unlisted opportunity if:
  • The student has a GPA below 3.0.
  • The student will not receive formal documentation of courses and grades, or will receive less formal documentation (i.e., a certificate).
  • The student does not have advanced foreign language skills, if applicable.
  • UNL has a listed program that is identical or very similar in nature.
  • The student wishes to directly enroll at a foreign university in a non-English-speaking country.
  • The only justification for selecting the program is low cost.

Earning Credit

While pre-approval of transfer credit is required for all students studying abroad and planning to transfer credit to UNL, it is especially important for students pursuing unlisted programs. If problems arise related to credit transfer or the acquisition of a transcript or certificate, UNL will be unable to advocate on behalf of the student. If an unlisted program is not approved, the student cannot transfer credit to UNL. Per the Chancellor’s Policy Memorandum 2013-10, “it will be assumed that any education abroad activity not registered with the UNL Education Abroad Office is not sponsored by the University and thus its participants are not eligible for scholarships, travel reimbursement, or academic credit.”

Course Credit

Please see the "Earning Credit" page on the Education Abroad website for more information.

Be sure to list Education Abroad as the correct office to receive your transcript from abroad:

Budget

Be sure to be in contact with the organization or education abroad program provider to learn about the full cost of your education abroad experience. UNL Education Abroad charges a $150 education abroad fee to all UNL students participating in an education abroad program.  See the Financial page on the Education Abroad website for additional information.

Billing & Scholarships

Students approved to participate in an unlisted program will only be billed by UNL for the Education Abroad Fee ($150) and the mandatory AIG insurance ($1.50 per day), but will not be billed by UNL for any other program costs. All other program costs will be paid directly by the student to the program administrator. If you use scholarships at UNL, please check the policies of your scholarships, as some scholarships can only be used for educational expenses billed through UNL Student Accounts (MyRED). In addition, while students pursuing unlisted programs may apply for UNL’s education abroad-specific scholarships, priority may be given to students on programs that are listed in MyWorld and formally affiliated with UNL.

Please see the Education Abroad website for detailed information about financial aid and scholarships.

Insurance Coverage

Students pursing Unlisted Programs for academic credit will be required to enroll in UNL's AIG student policy for the duration of the program. A student may request to be exempt from UNL's AIG policy if their Unlisted Program administrator requires students to enroll in its own comparable policy, contingent upon review and approval by the Director of Global Safety & Security (DGSS). The DGSS will not review individual or family insurance policies to determine whether they are comparable. As a result, in some cases students may be insured under two or more policies at the same time.
