- Continue your Spring Semester in Berlin by taking a summer course focused on theater with a UNL faculty member and either a) an internship in Berlin or b) an additional German language courses at the Humboldt Institut!
- Improve your German skills alongside UNL students and other university students from around the world in an intensive language institute!
Academics
Course of Study
The Summer Extended Program will begin on Saturday, April 16, 2022. All students will take GERM 302; a UNL course taught by the UNL Resident Director for three regular UNL credit hours.
Students will also choose one of the following "tracks": (both programs will begin on Saturday, April 16, 2022)
- Complete a credit-bearing internship: (custom dates)
- For those students participating on education-related internships, please reach out to Professor Christina Brantner for details as to the end date for the internship.
- Take additional intensive German language classes at the Humboldt Institut ending June 25, 2022.
Students will need to take a decision as to which "track" of the program they would like to participate on by:
- Internship Track: January 5, 2022 (commitment deposit deadline on January 5, 2022)
- Additional coursework at the Humboldt Institut: January 30, 2022 (commitment deposit deadline on February 1, 2022)
Course Credit
Students will earn three regular UNL credit hours for GERM 302. Students may also earn ACE 5 for the successful completion of GERM 302.
Those students participating on an internship will earn an additional three regular UNL credit hours for GERM 395 (required)
Those students continuing for 10 weeks at the Humbolt Institut will receive 10 transfer credit hours for their coursework in Intensive German as a Foreign Language. Credits earned at foreign institutions are transferable to UNL by departmental validation. Please review the Types of Credit page on the Education Abroad website.
Eligibility
This program is open to undergraduate UNL students in good academic standing who have participated in the Spring Semester 2022 Program in Berlin. Students interested in summer German studies who did not participate in the spring semester program may apply to the 6-week summer only program - German Language and Theater.

Ted Dawson, assistant professor of practice in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, researches German and Austrian literature and culture of the 20th and 21st centuries, focusing on rap music and environmentalism. Study abroad has played a crucial role in his life, beginning with a year spent as a college junior in Würzburg, Germany. After college and during graduate school, he lived for three years in Austria, mainly in Wien (Vienna). He has led study abroad programs in Wien and in Wiesbaden, Germany. Even though it will mean breaking a years-long streak of study abroad in cities starting with W (Wien, Wiesbaden, and Würzburg), he is excited to lead UNL's 2022 Berlin program and to have the opportunity to share the fascination of study abroad with a new group of students.
Location
Berlin, a vibrant metropolis, offers world-class musical ensembles and theaters, as well as art and history museums. Located in the heart of Germany, the city is both Germany's political and cultural capital. Each of Berlin's neighborhoods offers a different cultural experience, from the chic young quarter, Prenzlauer Berg, to multi-cultural Kreuzberg, to the Museumsinsel in Mitte. While living in Berlin, you will study at the Humboldt Institut.
Accommodations and Other Arrangements
INTERNATIONAL AIRFARE: Students will already be in country and participants on the 2022 Spring Semester Program. Thus, students will need to plan their return flight accordingly should they decide to stay and participate on this program.
LODGING in COUNTRY: Students will stay in rooms in the residence halls at the Humboldt Institut. Bedding and towels will be provided.
MEALS in COUNTRY: The Humboldt Institut will provide students with three meals a day. Fruit is available as a snack throughout the day. Students participating on the internship experience will receive breakfast and dinner each and will purchase lunch on their own.
TRANSPORTATION in COUNTRY: Students will have access to public transport throughout the program and may be asked to walk throughout the city as needed (excursions and field experiences).
ACCESS to LAUNDRY FACILITIES: The Humboldt Institut has a laundry room that students have access to with their room key. The charge for one load of laundry (wash and dry) is 2 EURO and laundry soap is provided.
COMMUNICATION & CONNECTIVITY: Students will have access to WiFi at the language institute. Students are required to purchase (included in program budget sheet) a local phone upon arrival in Berlin with cellular service/text to communicate with staff at the Humboldt Institut, IES Abroad and the UNL Resident Director at all times. Students may also elect to place a global plan on their cell phone, but all students must have a local phone number that can be accessed at all times.
HEALTH AND MOBILITY: Students need to be prepared to do a fair amount of walking in the city. Streets and sidewalks in Berlin are a mix of cobblestone and fairly flat surfaces.

Deposit
Upon confirmation of participation, participants will pay a $500 deposit. The $500 commitment deposit will be applied to the final program cost balance. If a participant withdraws from a program, the participant will be responsible for any irrecoverable costs associated with the program at the time of withdrawal (including a non-refundable $150 Education Abroad Fee).
