Understanding the Program Budget

The billable subtotal is the amount UNL will charge directly to students:

  • UNL Tuition/Fees: The UNL course will be designated as a "Field Course." As a result, the same tuition rate is assessed for resident and non-resident students. The UNL fees listed above is based on academic year 2021-2022 rates and are subject to change.
  • Program Cost: Group meals (welcome and farewell dinner), excursions, entrance fees, the cost of tuition (intensive language courses), accommodations, three meals each day and program support.

The non-billable subtotal will vary slightly for each student:

  • Out-of-Pocket Transportation - Estimate includes: Weekly and/or monthly metro pass within Berlin.
  • Out-of-Pocket Meals & Incidentals - Estimate includes: Miscellaneous daily expenses and books/supplies as needed, but not leisure (optional) travel.
  • Out-of-Pocket Communication - Estimate: All students must be able to communicate with the program leader at all times. Students are required to purchase a local phone upon arrival in Berlin or have a global phone plan on their domestic phone.
Students should be aware that some expenses must be paid before scholarships and financial aid are disbursed. It is important to develop a plan for covering any up-front costs. Your program's coordinator is happy to answer questions and address any concerns about the up-front costs related to your specific program.

Committing to Your Program

Upon acceptance to the program, students will receive detailed instructions about paying the commitment deposit to confirm their participation on the program. The deposit can be paid via credit, debit, check, or money order and will be applied to the billable program cost.

February 1, 2022: Deadline to pay the $500 commitment deposit or submit the Commitment Deposit Payment Deferment Agreement.

Commitment Deposit Payment Deferment Agreement: Any UNL student who has an Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) below $10,000 may commit to a program by submitting this agreement to the Education Abroad Office in lieu of paying a commitment deposit. Please see the "Announcements" section of your MyWorld application for more information.

June 12, 2022: Remainder of the billable subtotal due via MyRED student account.

Withdrawal Policy

If a participant withdraws from this program after paying the commitment deposit or submitting the Commitment Deposit Payment Deferment Agreement, the participant will be financially responsible for all non-recoverable costs associated with the program at the time of withdrawal, as well as the $150 Education Abroad Fee. Please note:
  • Non-recoverable costs vary by program and typically increase closer to the program start date.
  • Calculation of these costs may take time as the Education Abroad staff review the refund and cancellation policies of the program’s partners.
  • Each committed participant is responsible for a portion of program costs that are divided evenly among all participants. The participant’s portion of group costs is considered a non-recoverable cost.
  • The total non-recoverable amount may exceed the commitment deposit amount, in which case the participant will be billed the additional amount due.
